- 💡Count completed repeats, not repeats in progress, to avoid off-by-one errors.
How the Pattern Repeat Counter Works
The Pattern Repeat Counter works in 4 steps.
- 1
Enter the repeat total
Type the number of times the bracketed group repeats, for example 12, into Target Goal.
- 2
Copy the repeat into notes
Paste the bracketed instruction, such as "*sc, ch 1, sk 1*", into the notes box so the steps stay on screen.
- 3
Tap after each full repeat
Press Space or tap + Count after the last stitch of each repeat.
- 4
Reset for the next row
Reset to 0 when the row ends, then start counting repeats for the next row.
Pattern Repeat Counter Formula
The Pattern Repeat Counter formula converts repeats into stitches used.
Stitches used = Repeats completed × Stitches per repeat
Repeats remaining = Target repeats − Repeats completed
- Repeats completed
- The number on the counter
- Stitches per repeat
- Stitches from the previous row consumed by one repeat
- Target repeats
- The repeat count written after the bracket
Worked example: A shell repeat uses 6 stitches and the row has 14 repeats. After 9 repeats, stitches used = 9 × 6 = 54 and repeats remaining = 14 − 9 = 5.
Pattern Repeat Counter Conversion Table
The Pattern Repeat Counter conversion table shows stitches consumed after a number of repeats for 4 common repeat widths.
| Repeats completed | 2-st repeat | 3-st repeat | 4-st repeat | 6-st repeat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 6 |
| 2 | 4 | 6 | 8 | 12 |
| 5 | 10 | 15 | 20 | 30 |
| 8 | 16 | 24 | 32 | 48 |
| 10 | 20 | 30 | 40 | 60 |
| 12 | 24 | 36 | 48 | 72 |
| 15 | 30 | 45 | 60 | 90 |
| 20 | 40 | 60 | 80 | 120 |
Add any edge stitches outside the repeat to get the full row count.
What is a Pattern Repeat Counter?
A pattern repeat counter is a tool that counts how many times you have worked a repeated stitch group across a row or round. The Crochet Stitch Counter Pattern Repeat Counter adds 1 for each completed repeat of an instruction written between asterisks or brackets.
Patterns shorten long rows with repeat notation. "*Sc in next st, ch 1, sk 1* 12 times" means the 3 instructions inside the asterisks happen 12 times. Counting repeats is faster than counting every stitch, and repeat totals catch errors in lace, shells and ripples.
The counter tracks completed repeats only. A repeat in progress does not count until its last stitch is worked.
What are the Uses of a Pattern Repeat Counter?
There are 4 main uses of a Pattern Repeat Counter.
Working lace rows
Mesh and filet-style rows repeat short groups many times.
Counting shells and fans
Each shell counts as 1 repeat instead of 5 or 7 stitches.
Following ripple patterns
Peaks and valleys repeat every 12 to 16 stitches.
Finding row errors fast
A row that ends with a partial repeat shows a miscount within that row.
