Motif Joining Tracker Formula
The Motif Joining Tracker formula counts the edge seams in a rectangular grid.
Horizontal seams = Rows × (Columns − 1)
Vertical seams = Columns × (Rows − 1)
Total seams = Horizontal seams + Vertical seams
- Rows
- Motifs down
- Columns
- Motifs across
Worked example: An 8-column × 10-row grid has 10 × 7 = 70 horizontal seams and 8 × 9 = 72 vertical seams, for 142 seams in total.
Motif Joining Tracker Conversion Table
The Motif Joining Tracker conversion table lists total seams and long-seam lengths for common motif grids.
| Grid (columns × rows) | Motifs | Total edge seams | Long continuous seams |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 × 4 | 16 | 24 | 6 |
| 5 × 6 | 30 | 49 | 9 |
| 6 × 8 | 48 | 82 | 12 |

Long continuous seams join a full line of motifs in one pass with slip stitch or single crochet.
What is a Motif Joining Tracker?
A motif joining tracker is a tool that marks which motifs in a layout have been joined and how many seams remain. The Crochet Stitch Counter Motif Joining Tracker counts joins in a grid of squares or hexagons.
Joining is often the longest finishing step of a motif blanket. An 8 × 10 grid has 142 edge seams. Joining as you go (JAYG) attaches each motif while making its last round, and seaming joins finished motifs with whip stitch, slip stitch or single crochet.
Tracking seams shows what is left and prevents missed joins in the middle of the grid.
